Why I choose Daily Planning Pages for the Month of January

I have many goals this year. If your subscribed to my blog, you would have read all about my biggest goal this year which is writing. A big part of writing more means keeping track of your time and making the most of it.

Since I really wanted to be mindful of how I spent my time, including an hourly calendar in my bullet journal seemed necessary for the month of January. Practicing mindfulness meant having plenty of room for thought and reflection. I also used my hourly calendar to note throughout the month how I spent my time and whether it was wise or not.

I get to see where my time goes visually when I write it out. A big part of why I wanted to see my time is so that I could make more time for writing. Ultimately, learning how to time block and focusing in on writing for longer periods of time throughout the day.

I’m not going to lie to you, my January 2021 time management was not on point. Looking back on how I used my time, I had so many opportunities for growth, but neglected them due to laziness. How I spent my time in the month of January wasn’t different from the months prior. The difference between all last year and January was my attentiveness to time.

I physically saw were I was lacking and was able to make notes on my actions to better prepare me for the following day. One of the most important things I was able to notice was after working all day at a desk, I found it twice as hard to continue this white collar work for my own business because I had been doing all day and I wanted to change my scenery.

Since I had noticed this difficulty in the beginning of the month, I had plenty of time to figure out the best way to give my mind a break and recharge. I tried many things right after work to “recharge” to see what would be most beneficial for myself. A few things that helped me recharge while still be productive was taking a long hot shower, doing the dishes, sweeping and even mopping occasionally.

Now I understand everyone is different and cleaning isn’t everyone’s way of recharging. Some other ideas for giving your mind a break could be reading, walking or even working out. The big take away here is that I found I needed a short break between working full-time and getting started on my small business in order to make the most of the time I had left throughout the day.

Another thing I noticed was my productivity levels in the mornings compared to the evenings. This was strange to me at first because I am not a morning person what so ever. However, I made it a point to wake up earlier and write something. Even if it was just for 5 or 10 minutes. That way in the evening when I did sit down to write again, I already had something to work off of.

I noticed many other things about myself when I laid out my days in full details that aren’t related to writing. For example, habits I did every day unconsciously. Through this time of reflection, I took away many things that were all very beneficial to myself.

Whether you are a planner or not, I recommend taking the time to note how your days plan out, so that when you do look back at the day, you can seek out areas for improvement. Time isn’t going anywhere, so it is better to take time management head on rather than ignoring it for a different day.
